WHAT?
Today I’m going to tell you about an ancient beauty ritual which I just recently discovered myself: Dry brushing your skin. I first got to know about this during the ‘Mooi onder één kap’ event I attended a few months ago where hormone consultant Debbie van Weelden gave us a detox workshop. She teached us a few different ways to detox your body in a natural way. One of these manners is dry brushing which stimulates the lymphatic system (absorbs superfluous body fluids, fat and waste) increases the blood circulation to the skin which helps to eliminate toxins. It also helps improving your digestion, which will help you losing weight. Next to that dry brushing also has lots of advantages for the outside of your body which I might find even more interesting. First of all it unclogs the pores and exfoliates the skin which makes your skin soft and smooth, gives it a nice glow and helps prevent ingrown hairs. It also helps to soften fatty areas which in combination with the toxin elimination helps to reduce cellulite. That’s already reason enough for me to try, but there’s more: It also soothes the mind. It feels nice and peaceful. Therefore many people in the yoga scene practice dry brushing. If you do it in the morning immediately after you step out of your bed, it also helps you to really wake up. I’ve been dry brushing for a few weeks now and I’m hooked: It’s a great feeling, my skin feels softer and even looks tanned and I also think my cellulite decreased. Did I convince you? Then it’s time to explain to you how you do this.

HOW TO?
There’s nothing hard about dry brushing, it’s just like the name says the technique of brushing your skin dry (without water, oils or creams). You do this in long upward stroking motion towards your heart, starting at your feet. How long you do this is completely up to you, but spend a little more time on your ‘problem areas’ (to me these are my hips and butt) and give those a bit more pressure. You preferably dry brush in the morning and before you take a shower (your skin has to be dry). You can just use a wooden brush you might know for underneath the shower to reach your back to do this. These kind of brushes are available at health stores. Make sure the brush has natural and no synthetic hairs though. I’ve got a bit more special one myself: One with soft natural hairs on both sides and with an arched shape which optimal adapts to your body shape. I love it, especially since I can brush my problem areas (hips and butt) very well with this one. You can buy this brush here. Watch the video on top of this post of a woman who has been dry brushing for 25 years (!) already for a visual explanation.

JADEROLLER
Such a brush is to rough for your face though and will only cause damage. But luckily there’s a solution for this: The jaderoller. This roller is made of 100% jade (a gemstone) which has already been used as a beauty tool by Chinese empresses. Daily use of the jaderoller has the same effect for your face as the dry brush has for your body. It stimulates the blood circulation of your face and gives you a healthier complexion. It also stimulates your lymphatic system eliminating toxins. It also revines your pores, which can help against acne. Next to that the jaderoller makes wrinkles look less deep ánd decrease dark circles underneath your eyes. Besides that it just gives you a nice cooling feeling. For an extra cooling effect you can put it in the refrigerator for a little while. It’s completely up to you how long you use your jaderoller. I’m easily rolling for half an hour, since I’m watching TV at the same moment and since I just love the feeling. The jaderoller is available here.
