Like you might already know by now I’m a huge animal lover and I especially adore cats. Last week I saw a very disturbing post circulating on Facebook about MAC testing on animals, cats among them. Now I did read some comments about it being an old photo and not taken at a laboratorium of MAC, but that doesn’t matter. Fact is that MAC does test on animals, because it’s mandatory in China. And tests on cats are not rare in China. You do the math.

Although I already knew about MAC testing on animals for quite a while now, I didn’t really give it much thought. I just buried my head in the sand. I just love MAC’s products so much (my favorite lipstick, lip pencil and foundation are all from MAC) that I just didn’t want to know. But after the confrontation on Facebook I couldn’t take it any longer. The photos made me super sad and when I looked my sweet kitties in the eyes I knew I couldn’t support this any longer: I’m going animal cruelty free!

What that really means to me? It means that from now on I won’t buy any non cruelty free cosmetics anymore. I’m not rigiously throwing out all the non cruelty free cosmetics I already have, since I find it quite a waste for all the euros I spent on them and because the guilty companies won’t notice it (I already paid for it). Of course this also means I won’t post any reviews of non cruelty free cosmetics anymore. Why I won’t become a vegetarian or vegan? Because I simply like meat and for meat we need animals. We don’t need animals for testing cosmetics though. Plus animals kept for their meat don’t have to suffer a lot first, which animals kept for testing do. Think for example of dogs and bunnies blinded because of mascara dripped in their eyes. Yikes! Unfortunately I also do know some slaughter animals aren’t treated as well as they should and therefore want to pay better attention to the ‘Better Living Mark’, but that’s another subject.

I used MAC as an example now, because of the Facebook post and because I own a lot of MAC products, but obviously MAC is not the only non cruelty free cosmetics brand. Brands like Estée Lauder, Stila, L’Oréal, Maybelline and Covergirl test on animals as well. Fortunately there are lots of awesome brands who don’t test on animals as well. Examples are Urban Decay, Smashbox, Tarte, Lush, Too Faced, NYX, The Body Shop, Essence, Catrice, Gosh, Hourglass, Illamasqua, Kat von D, The Balm, Anastasia Beverly Hills and Sans Soucis. Too bad about MAC, but there’s still plenty of choice! How I know whether a brand is cruelty free or not? By the information provided on the websites of companies themselves (I don’t think they dare to lie about it, since that would cause huge problems) and by the PETA list.

Zoals jullie inmiddels waarschijnlijk wel weten ben ik een dierenliefhebber en ben ik vooral dol op katten. Nu zag ik laatst een heel naar bericht met foto’s op Facebook circuleren over hoe MAC test op dieren, onder andere katten. Nu las ik wel wat commentaar over dat het een oude foto zou zijn en dat deze niet is gemaakt bij het laboratorium van MAC, maar dat doet er niet toe. Feit is namelijk dat MAC wél test op dieren, omdat dat nou eenmaal verplicht is in China. En tests op katten zijn niet zeldzaam in China. You do the math.

Hoewel ik wel al langer wist dat MAC op dieren test dacht ik er niet zo bij na. Of beter gezegd: stak ik mijn kop in het zand. Ik ben gewoon zo dol op de producten van MAC (zowel mijn favoriete lippenstift, lippotlood en foundation zijn van MAC) dat ik er liever niet teveel bij nadacht. Maar na de confrontatie op Facebook kon ik het niet langer verdragen. Ik werd intens verdrietig van de foto’s en toen ik mijn lieve katjes in de ogen keek wist ik dat ik dit niet langer kon ondersteunen: ik ga dierproefvrij!

Wat dat voor mij precies inhoudt? Dat ik vanaf nu geen cosmetica meer koop die niet-dierproefvrij is. Ik ga nu niet rigoureus alle niet-dierproefvrije cosmetica die ik al heb in de prullenbak gooien, omdat ik dat nu eenmaal zonde vind voor alle euro’s die ik eraan heb besteed en de schuldige bedrijven hier zelf niets van zullen merken (er is immers al voor betaald). Vanzelfsprekend betekent dat ook dat ik geen reviews meer zal plaatsen van niet-dierproefvrije cosmetica. Waarom ik als dierenvriend dan geen vegetariër of zelfs veganist wordt? Omdat ik vlees lekker vind en voor vlees nu eenmaal dieren nodig zijn. Voor het testen van cosmetica daarentegen zijn geen dieren nodig. Plus dat dieren die voor hun vlees worden gehouden niet eerst een onnodige lijdensweg hoeven te volgen, wat bij proefdieren zeker wel het geval is. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan hondjes en konijntjes die verblind worden omdat mascara in hun oogjes wordt gedruppeld. Bah! Helaas weet ik ook dat het ene slachtdier niet even goed wordt behandeld als het andere slachtdier en daarom wil ik ook beter gaan letten op het ‘Beter Leven Keurmerk; , maar dat is een ander onderwerp.

Ik heb nu MAC als voorbeeld genomen, vanwege het Facebook bericht en omdat ik veel producten van MAC heb, maar MAC is natuurlijk niet het enige niet-dierproefvrije cosmeticamerk. Ook merken zoals Estée Lauder, Stila, L’Oréal, Maybelline en Covergirl testen op dieren. Gelukkig zijn er ook genoeg fijne merken die niet op dieren testen. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn Urban Decay, Smashbox, Tarte, Lush, Too Faced, NYX, The Body Shop, Essence, Catrice, Gosh, Hourglass, Illamasqua, Kat von D, The Balm, Anastasia Beverly Hills, en Sans Soucis. Jammer van MAC, maar genoeg keuze dus! Maar als we nu allemaal dierproefvrij gaan, wordt MAC dat misschien ook wel. Hoe ik weet of een merk dierproefvrij is? Door informatie over dierproeven op de website van het bedrijf zelf (ik denk niet dat ze hierover durven te liegen op hun website, omdat ze dan een heel groot probleem hebben) en door de lijst van PETA.
