If you follow me on instagram you probably already know that Vincent and I are getting addition the family. No, I’m not pregnant (God no!), but we’re getting a kitten named Hercules. It’s a black smoke Maine Coon and he’s now 8 weeks old. When he’s 13 weeks old we can welcome him in our home and of course we’re very much looking forward to that moment! If you’re getting a cat there are you couple of things you need to have: A litter box, food and a food bowl and a scratching post. Especially if you have a cat that won’t come outside and therefore is not able to sharpen his nails on trees it’s important to have a good scratching post, unless you don’t mind your cat destroying your furniture. A good scratching post doesn’t wobble and allows the cat to get a full stretch. If a scratching post doesn’t meet these requirements the sofa might be more appealing. So a good scratching post is definitely worth the investment. Like I said Vincent and I are getting a Maine Coon which is known for it’s enormous size. They’re the biggest domestic cats existing and males can weigh up to 12 kilos. So you probably understand a small scratching post won’t be an option. I also didn’t want a scratching post that would take up the entire living room though. After some internet research I found out about the existence of ceiling scratching posts, of which I noticed lots of advantages. First of all they’re incredibly firm, since they stretch between the floor and ceiling. It should totally be able to hold a 12 kilo cat. Next to that they allow even the biggest cats to do a full stretch and give the cats the ability to go high. Cats feel most comfortable on high spaces where they have a good overview. For these reasons we decided we wanted to get Hercules a ceiling scratching post.

Unfortunately most scratching posts are not quite flattering for your interior and that would be such a waste for our carefully chosen interior. What I especially hate about most scratching posts is the pluche where usually the base plate and baskets are covered with. I think this looks incredibly cheap and ugly. After lots of searching I stumbled upon the website of Rufi Drapaki and I immediately knew I wanted a scratching post from this brand. The base plate and baskets are made of heavy (which contributes to the stability) high quality wood which are available in four colors of wood and also for the baskets you have a wide choice of patterns and colors. This way you can completely adjust the post to your own interior. I’ve chosen for clear wood and cube gray which as you can tell by the photos perfectly matches our interior. I of course looked for experiences of other people and all were very positive. Many already have a Rufi Drapaki for years and they claim the poles still look like new while it gets scratched daily. This in contrast to the cheaper scratching posts of which the sisal rope already hangs loose after a few months.

Al these advantages made me just go for it: I paid 300 euros for a scratching post. That probably sounds like madness, but because of the quality and good looks I was more than willing to pay this. Let’s hope Hercules is going to like it! I can’t wait to see him racing up and down on this scratching post!

Als je mij volgt op instagram weet je waarschijnlijk al dat Vincent en ik gezinsuitbreiding krijgen. Nee, ik ben niet zwanger (God no!), maar we krijgen een kitten genaamd Hercules! Het is een black smoke Maine Coon en hij is nu 8 weekjes oud. Als hij 13 weken oud is mag hij bij ons komen wonen en daar hebben we natuurlijk superveel zin in! Als je een kat in huis neemt zijn er een aantal dingen die je moet hebben: Een kattenbak, voer en voerbakjes en een krabpaal. Vooral als je een binnenkat hebt en je kat dus niet zijn nagels kan scherpen aan bomen is het heel belangrijk om een goede krabpaal te hebben, tenzij je het natuurlijk niet erg vindt dat je kat je meubilair aan gort krabt. Een goede krabpaal wiebelt niet en staat de kat toe om zijn gehele lichaam te rekken. Als een krabpaal niet aan deze eisen voldoet is de bank of deurpost waarschijnlijk aanlokkelijker. Een goede krabpaal is dus zeker wel het investeren waard. Zoals ik zei krijgen Vincent en ik een Maine Coon welke bekend staan om hun grootte. Het zijn de grootste huiskatten die bestaan en mannetjes kunnen wel 12 kilo wegen. Je begrijpt dus dat een kleine smalle krabpaal geen optie is. Ik wilde echter ook geen krabpaal die de halve woonkamer in beslag zou nemen. Na wat internet research te hebben gedaan kwam ik achter het bestaan van plafondkrabpalen, waar ik ontzettend veel voordelen in zag. Allereerst staan ze ontzettend stevig, omdat ze tussen de vloer en het plafond spannen. Een kat van 12 kilo moet ie met gemak kunnen houden. Daarnaast geven ze zelfs de grootste katten de mogelijkheid tot een volledige stretch en geven ze katten de mogelijkheid om het hogerop te zoeken. Katten voelen zich namelijk het meest op hun gemak op een hoge plek waar ze goed overzicht hebben. Om deze redenen waren we er dus al snel over uit dat we een plafondkrabpaal wilden kopen voor Hercules.

Helaas zijn de meeste krabpalen nou niet bepaald een aanwinst in je interieur en dat vonden we wel ontzettend zonde voor ons zorgvuldig uitgezochte interieur waar we toch best een beetje trots op zijn. Wat ik met name lelijk vindt aan de meeste krabpalen is het pluche waarmee meestal de grondplaat en de mandjes bedekt zijn. Ik vind dit ontzettend goedkoop staan. Na heel veel gezoek kwam ik terecht bij de website van Rufi Drapaki en ik wist meteen dat ik een krabpaal van dit merk wilde. De grondplaat en de houders van de matjes zijn namelijk gemaakt van kwalitatief en zwaar hout (wat bijdraagt aan de stabiliteit) welke je in vier verschillende kleuren kan krijgen en voor de matjes zelf heb je ruime keuze uit kleuren en patronen. Zo kan je de paal helemaal aanpassen aan je eigen interieur. Zo heb ik gekozen voor clear wood en cube gray wat zoals je op de foto’s ziet perfect past bij ons interieur. Ik heb natuurlijk voor aankoop wel gezocht naar ervaringen van andere mensen en alle ervaringen waren heel positief. Velen hebben al jaren een Rufi Drapaki en de palen zien er nog uit als nieuw terwijl er dagelijks aan gekrabd wordt. Dit in tegenstelling tot de goedkope krabpalen waarbij het sisal touw al na enkele maanden eraf hangt.

Al deze voordelen zorgden ervoor dat ik overstag ging: Ik telde 300 euro neer voor een krabpaal. Dat klinkt waarschijnlijk als gekkenwerk, maar gezien de kwaliteit en de uitstraling heb ik het er graag voor over. Nu hopen dat Hercules er ook blij mee gaat zijn! Ik kan niet wachten om ‘m op en neer te zien racen op zijn krabpaal!
